Owing to my lethargy in booking train tickets early on, it looked like the three day weekend was going to be spent doing nothing in Chennai, alone.
Due to throwing of much emotions and some generosity to go with, I landed up in Madurai and Kodaikanal instead. Doing lots of things and not being alone.
After a long time of flying the puke inducing Air India flight Chennai-Kozhikode-Muscat-Kozhikode-Chennai , I got to fly in Jet Airways and Paramount Airways for the journey to and fro respectively.
Jet Airways has the handsomest planes. The blue gives it an edge, which red simply cannot come close to. They served Tamil Nadu Parottas, the small flaky ones,on the flight. I dont think I ever had such good food on any flight before.
Madurai. I was born there, my mother was born and brought up there and my father was born there. The city had changed so much, and also I could not remember the last time I had visited. Sadly, I could not even recognize my father's grandmothers place.
My mothers home. With it countless memories. Building sand castles with moats and then crashing into it with wooden cars, playing cricket, hide and seek, climbing trees and onto rooftops, chewing gum in my hair. My grandmother and my cousins. Kothu kari and bovonto.
Had kothu kari with rice the night I landed up there. Poori and kothu kari the next morning. Happy.
Got an incredible headache on the drive upto Kodai. Disappered once the house came into view.
The Kodai house. It is a quaint cute looking thing, on the way to the Bear Shola falls. It belongs to my uncles family. It was built in 1951, and belonged to a Britisher before he sold it off. The house came along with the books, which fills both side of the drawing and dining room.
My aunt goes to Kodai every year during the summer, and all those who are free tag along. The last time I had gone was two years back, and some things never change. Thank God for that. Cheese toasts, cheese omlettes, bacon, chicken, mashed potatoes, unbelievably green vegetables, wide variety of puddings, doughnuts...sigh. The cook at the house, makes incredible English food, hence the wide assortment of items to feast on.
Then there are the long walks, cycling around the lake, trekking around Bear Shola falls, my ancestors memorial at Guna caves, the Kurinji temple, ice cream from spencers, home made chocolates, cards, scotland yard, badminton, cricket, Broken Arrow, Speed, and scary movies at night. I remember watching Omen and Exorcist on consecutive nights, some years back. Also remember not being able to sleep after either of the days.
This time, played pictionary. Used to play pictionary in Stella hostel. Experience did nothing to improve my drawing though. My cousin felt my map of India looked like an amoeba.
Got to ride in a Skoda Fabia. It is a really cool car.
So, spent three days in Kodai. Had to bear another head ache ridden drive down to the plains. The headache which left only for the period of the flight the next day morning.
Paramount Airways. It was my first time flying on Paramount, and I was impressed. They had somebody to take care of baggage and check-in. The seats were incredibly comfy, and the food- cornflakes, fried chicken, fluffy omellette, potatoes, croissant, fruits and tea. Dont think I ever felt so happy on a flight.
Then the long ride to Adyar and then to TTK road, sufficient enough for the headache to get back. Also, the flyover on Kathippara has done nothing to ease the traffic.
Office. Monday. Is kind of self-explanatory.
