Rahul Dravid. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him walk on to the crease at Lords in 1996. Even though I acknowledge Sachin's genius, there was nothing special in watching the Indian cricket team bat pre-1996. I always preferred watching the South African team.
Then Lords happened. Dravid. Then Ganguly and Laxman. Suddenly, there were some interesting people in the team and who played brilliant cricket.
Now, when I say I love Dravid, it does not mean I am a mad fan. I cant recall all his match stats, nor do I know his birthday. Just that I really enjoy watching him play, and feel real bad when things don't go well for him. And yes, he is damn good looking and my heart beats a little faster every time I watch him.
The sad part about this? For some odd reason, every time I watch him bat, inevitably he gets out in the next five to ten minutes. It is not even safe for me to follow his batting on cricinfo commentary. All his famous test innings, I used to watch in breaks, afraid of jinxing it for him.
Though the time I did mange to see him bat in the stadium, he scored a fifty, and won the match for India. One match is anyway nothing to go by.
Today, I realised it had been a long time since I watched Dravid bat. So I prayed for my jinx fears to be stupid, and watched him bat. He looked good. Seriously. Sigh. Anyway, coming to the point, which is that he got out in like ten mins. Unfair.
Wonder if this would have happened if Chris Martin had been a cricketer.
